COVID-19 Supplemental Paid Sick Leave Set to Expire

Workers in California will see their COVID-19 sick leave expire on September 30, 2021. The leave entitles employees up to 80 hours of COVID-19 related sick leave if they work for a business with more than 25 employees.

The leave applies to an employee who is unable to work or telework for any of these reasons:

  • You’re caring for yourself due to a COVID-19 quarantine or your experiencing symptoms;
  • You’re caring for a family member quarantining or a child whose school or childcare is closed due to COVID-19; or
  • You have a vaccine appointment, or cannot work or telework because you’re experiencing vaccine-related symptoms.

The leave went into effect on March 29, 2021 and covers the period between January 1 and September 30, 2021. If you took a leave due to COVID-19 prior to March 29, be sure to reach out to your employer to get your sick leave covered. You can visit the California Department of Industrial Relations eligibility tool for more information.
